Handling Infertility Problems the Right Way

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive a child or sustain a pregnancy to childbirth. It is said to exist when a pregnancy has not occurred after at least a year of unprotected coitus. Infertility treatments are methods used in order to enhance fertility.

Couples exploring the possibility of conceiving a child together come in many forms, and therefore unique. Those who have been trying to get pregnant without success or have been told by their doctors to be infertile must understand that not everyone is made equal.

This strongly suggests that while other women may find it much easier and faster to procreate, couples who haven’t done the same need not worry. It’s all a matter of time and healthy lifestyle changes. Here are some ways to boost fertility and help you and your partner pave the way towards parenthood.

Age and Infertility Problems

It is long believed that women over the age of 35 have less chances of conceiving. This is backed up by the knowledge that from the time a woman is born, she is equipped with all the eggs she will ever have in a lifetime, and therefore the older she gets, the lesser the chance she will produce better eggs.

However, numerous women over the age of 40 have attested to have conceived and undergone a perfectly healthy pregnancy. So it’s not entirely age that affects fertility, but rather, the changes that come along with age. As our bodies mature, many of our bodily functions deteriorate.

It is believed however, that providing the right environment for a woman who is trying to conceive may hold the key to improving fertility, regardless of age. A woman’s eggs generally react to internal and external factors. Hence, when a healthy, positive environment is arranged, the woman’s ovaries tend to react positively also. This is achieved when a lifestyle change is made such as proper diet and exercise are observed and reduction of stress and negative emotions are made.

Effects of Infertility Treatments & Medications

There have been studies that suggest the use of some medications may affect fertility. Steroids are anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat various conditions such as asthma and lupus and in high doses, they are thought to suppress the pituitary gland from producing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) which are important for normal ovulation to occur.

Some anti-depressants are also not recommended for women planning to get pregnant.  Even testosterone shots for men may have some effect on their partner’s fertility as well. It is always best to consult your doctor if in case you are maintaining one or several drugs so you can be advised properly.

Stress and Infertility

Stress is another factor which most people point out as the culprit for infertility. And rightly so. When a woman becomes stressed, the rest of her body systems are also drained out. The hypothalamus, which is mainly responsible for the regulation of our emotions, appetites and hormones, may decide to delay ovulation in response to stress.

This is a defence mechanism done to put the body back in perfect condition before assuming the normal functions it should be doing. There are several ways in order to decrease stress however, and these include acupuncture, meditation and yoga. Cognitive behavioural therapy or taking a stress management course may also help.

Diet and Nutrition

Measures in order to nourish healthy cells include a diet high in fat and essential oils, cruciferous vegetables, organic foods and hormone-free meats, and avoidance of alcohol and caffeine.

Essential fatty acids such as Omega 3 which can be found in fish and nuts are vital in removing fat deposits from blood and also improve circulation. This is needed in order to supply good circulation to the uterus and ovaries to ensure that the eggs remain healthy.

Cruciferous vegetables are known to contain a compound that helps metabolize estradiol which is a naturally occurring estrogen in the body but without real benefits. When intake of vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower are increased, estradiol can be broken down into more beneficial estrogens.

A diet of organic food and hormone-free meats generally mean that you won’t be eating any of the synthetic pesticides used that may harm your body system. Fresher foods also mean no preservatives as these are known to have effects on fertility also.

It is also advisable for you to eat more alkaline food over acidic ones such as fruits and vegetables because it is believed that sperm can only live in an alkaline environment, thus improving the chances of you getting pregnant.

Lifestyle Changes

One cannot overemphasize the importance of doing proper exercise in order to maintain a healthy and strong body capable of bearing an equally healthy fetus. Exercise helps tone the muscles needed for childbearing, and it also impresses a positive disposition for women who undergo such activity.

Smoking is known to decrease blood circulation, therefore it is important for women to stop smoking should they wish to conceive. Decreased circulation to the uterus and ovaries result to poorly nourished eggs and thus unable to produce normally than they should.

The Chinese View

We are all too familiar about the western way of enhancing fertility, but nowadays, Traditional Chinese medicine has been given recognition for the successful methods it provides. Its perspective is that infertility is caused by kidney and spleen dysfunction. Through a combination of herbal therapy, diet and acupuncture, Traditional Chinese medicine treats infertility by treating first these two important organs.

Kidneys are believed to be responsible for genetic make-up and it determines growth and development while the spleen is said to control the energetic processes of the body. It also controls the hormones important to conception and pregnancy. In order to enhance fertility, these two organs must be well taken care of. The methods may take a lot longer than necessary but in the end, it all becomes worth it when you discover you’re already pregnant.
